7th Grade FitnessGram testing for Blocks 5 and 6 with Jana McAdams - Physical Education Teacher

As a 7th grade student in California, you will be taking part in the Fitnessgram physical fitness test. The Fitnessgram is a state mandated standardized assessment for students in grades five, seven, and nine. It was developed by The Cooper Institute and is a comprehensive, health-related physical fitness assessment with the goal of helping students establish lifelong habits of regular physical activity.

The Fitnessgram uses different tests to assess the five components of health-related physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition). Student results from each individual test are evaluated against the Healthy Fitness Zone standards. The Healthy Fitness Zone standards are criterion-referenced standards that compare students to a set measure of personal fitness for students at a certain age. When testing is completed, student scores are reported and entered into a district- and state-wide database.

The seven tests that your student will be taking part in are the PACER, 1-Mile run, Push-ups, Curl-ups, Trunk Lift, Sit and Reach, and BMI (height and weight).

Students are scheduled to take part in the Fitnessgram May 15-26. During their history class, small groups of students will be pulled out to complete Push-ups, Curl-ups, Trunk Lift, Sit-and-Reach, and BMI. During physical education, students will complete the 1-Mile run and the PACER. Each student will be individually assessed by Ms. McAdams. After testing, scores will be submitted to the state and school-wide reports will be completed and disbursed in the fall.

The tentative testing schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday, May 16 or Friday, May 19: Push-ups & Curl-ups
  • Wednesday, May 17: 1-Mile run
  • Monday, May 22: PACER
  • Tuesday, May 23 or Friday, May 25: Trunk Lift, Sit-and-Reach, BMI

Every year IVA participates in the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) state testing. These assessments are based off of common core standards that put an emphasis on challenging students to understand subject matter more deeply, think more critically, and apply their learning to the real world. SBAC tests currently occur in the subjects of English and Math for all grades, with a new California Science Pilot Test (CAST) happening in the 8th grade. These assessments will start in the last week of April and continue throughout the month of May.

Our students are prepared and familiar with the SBAC and CAST testing format. In every class (not just Math, Science, and English) our end-of-unit summative assessments go hand in hand with the performance tasks that students will see on these tests. Students will be able to apply the skills they have fostered all year long to these state assessments. To learn more about how state test scores are used by LBUSD for the High School Choice process, read more on our website here.

Note: There will be times throughout the SBAC testing that require students to listen to a spoken passage. In order to do this students will need to use headphones. While IVA does have some headphones, our stock is limited. We highly encourage your student to bring their own low profile headphones if they have them.
